Book Cougars Episode 211 - Diving Into Summer - Audio Only
On Episode 211 we dove into summer with our first big #BiblioAdventure of the season! It involved art by kids inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope is the thing with feathers,” lobster, a little free library, and Bank Square Books. A great day! In other Biblio Adventures, Emily went to see Ann Leary talk about her new essay collection, I’VE TRIED BEING NICE, at R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT. She also found an adorable #LFL in a tree stump! Chris attended a virtual panel discussion of NEW SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION by the North Central Connecticut Chapter of The International Thomas Merton Society.
In the Just Read segment, the books we talk about include:
- PEARCE OYSTERS by Joselyn Takacs
- THE GUNCLE by Steven Rowley
- ARSENIC AND ADOBO by Mia P. Manansala
- LOVE AND HOT CHICKEN: A Delicious Southern Novel by Mary Liza Hartong
- DIVE! The Story of Breathing Underwater by Chris Gall
Three reference books make brief but important appearances: THE READERS’ ADVISORY GUIDE TO ROMANCE by Robin Bradford and both the APA and MLA style guides.
Short stories:
- “Idle Hands” from the collection CRAFT: Stories I Wrote for the Devil by Ananda Lima
- “Why Won’t You Die?” by Jessica P. Pryde from the collection SOMEPLACE GENEROUS: An Inclusive Romance Anthology edited by Elaina Ellis and Amber Flame.
- “Her Boss” by Willa Cather from the collection UNCLE VALENTINE AND OTHER STORIES: Willa Cather’s Uncollected Short Fiction, 1915-1929 edited by Bernice Slote.
We also talk about what we’re currently reading, want to read, and upcoming #biblioadventures. Oh, and we announce our THIRD QUARTER READALONG PICK for our Year of Reading Romance!
We hope you enjoy the episode and if so, please consider leaving a review wherever you listen, as it really does help others find us.

I just finished "The Winter Queen" by Boris Akunin. It felt very noirish. I don't think I read much Judy Blume as a child as I went to a country school and there were few books there. Our Teacher had to go to a public library and just grab what she could get from the shelves in a hurry as she had to go after work before they closed. Bless her memory.

My favourite Judy Blume is Tiger Eyes. I still get emotional reading that book. The film is also very good.

I’m in the middle of reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and really enjoying it. I also did a buddy read with one of my sons but the book we read ( The Husbands) did not work for either of us. It won’t stop us from future buddy reads! Ha!

Somehow I missed Judy Blume. Maybe I'm too old but I did recently watched the movie as I love author biogrophy movies. So I am very interested in The Genius. thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'm now on a road trip from Cape Cod to Wisconsin and boy am I having lots and lots of biblioadventures. Buying way too many books and seeing how different parts of the U.S.A use and decorate their libraries. I'm still trying to get through The Count of Monte Cristo on this trip. Just past the half way poiint. Not a good book for a road journey but I don't want to put it down. Had to drag out my computer to watch Friday Reads. Love your videos.

Oh, boys and fiction! What a great day it was, when my child came home with a friend (they were 16 or 17), and he just got stuck at my fiction+ poetry shelves. And we discussed a bunch of them (including Plath, btw), and I got RECOMMENDATIONS (!). Of course, when he noted Ocean Vuong wanting to read it, I gifted the signed copy. He is always welcome in our house 😂

The Migrant Chef sounds wonderful. Just passed the 25% mark of The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm listening and reading. Surprise, surprise the edition I'm reading and the one I'm listening to are slightly different. Makes for an interesting experience. I'm loving it. Its my big book for the summer. I was really hesitant to give up the time it might take but once started I can barely put it down (I have to because it is so heavy LOL). but am loving it and now 300+ pages in, know I will continue. Can't wait to hear the next podcast. Always happy to see you two ladies on UA-cam. Favorite book of May was Bright Young Women. So, so unputdownable.

I'm very intrigued by the Isabella Stewart Gardner book. Go, go, go to the museum in Boston. I thoroughly enjoyed it but it was many years ago and they were in the process of remodeling (adding a cafe, revamping galleries, etc.). The best part of the ISG Museum is that you're able to see fine art in its natural setting, as it were. You see the rooms of her home and the art is hanging on her walls, just as it was when she first acquired it. Think I'll check out that book from the library.

Can I sign up for the newsletter again? Already get it and love it, Don't want to miss out on this give away. Love Sara Paretsky. She knows how to put together great mysteries and am looking to get back to the series. Just finished reading The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ozeki. I loved this book. It was as good as her previous A Tale for the Time Being. I love how her books, especially the Zen and Buddhist references that ground her stories. The book within a book and the book telling the story with so many great references about how books interact and engage with a reader were so great. Listened to the audio and read from the print--it was a book that was fun to listen to but I had to have the print to underline and mark passages. Its a keeper. Now reading News of the Dead which I bought on my last trip to Edinburgh. It won the Walter Scott prize for historical fiction so I had to pick it up. Looking forward to the next podcast as always.

I'd not heard of this challenge, but I just found your channel. I just started Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens. I'm on page 40 of 928, so I'll count that. 😊❤📚

Discovery of Witches is an awesome book! Professor Harkness has her 5th book in the series coming out on the 16th of July - The Blackbird Oracle. Can't wait!

Just finished Outlander book 8, over 1100 pgs. It was a task but a lot going on. Good ending Now off to read my bookclub June book.

I've read the first three Outlander books and will probably start the forth this summer. I'm happy to hear you say it is a good ending. My mom was a little conflicted about it (but didn't give me any spoilers, of course). --Chris

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on “Fellowship Point”. The cover art is very appealing.
